Bridges cross
the Waal at the Dutch city of Nijmegen
and the Rhein
(same river) at the German city of Emmerich.
Between those points the only way across is
what the Dutch call a fietsveer: a bicycle ferry.
Like many similar ferries
around Europe, these are fun, fresh-air, quickie
“cruises” in the price range of a euro or so. In
this particular area they lead to some very interesting hiking and
cycling through protected wetland areas that are rich with wildlife.
Most
wildfowl pictures
in this
section were shot in or near Millingerwaard,
a wetland area near the town of Millingen aan de Rijn, which is also
aan de border with Germany. Click the Veer
Routes sign for a larger image. On the other side of the
river, the ferry pictured stops at Gendt, beside a campground.
