Ferries and yachts in Zadar Harbor

From this vantage point the past is on the left and the present on the right. The photo was taken was taken from the footbridge crossing the Luka (13 on the map) and the inset photo from a spot near where the ferry to Dugi Otok is boarded (2 on map).

On the left is old-town Zadar, with its narrow streets and walkways, secluded gardens, old buildings, ancient cathedrals, and the Roman Forum area with some even more ancient stone artifacts strewn around. On the right, past the moored yachts, are the discotheques, shops, services and other accoutrements of modern European life. The bridge is one way to cross the Luka. The vivid red rowboat (below) is another.

The ferries in this harbor take you to Dugi Otok, Uglijan, and other islands in the Zadar Archipelago — places well off the beaten path where there is peaceful solitude aplenty. The harbor area itself, however, can be a madhouse. Cars, trucks and foot passengers queue up to get onboard. It's a good idea to buy ferry tickets ahead of time.
