(coming soon) | Croatia Makarska Riviera | ![]() Biokovo Mountain towers above the Makarska Riviera and dominates the skyline for miles around. Mouflon big horn sheep can be seen at the higher elevations. At sea level, the warm Mediterranean climate contributes to the beach-town atmosphere. The Riviera is also a good place to arrange a charter boat to tour the country's more than one thousand islands, or simply take a ferry to the nearby island of Brac. Scenery along the coast road south from Split toward Dubrovnik is spectacular and relatively unobstructed, easily rivaling Highway One in northern California for sheer coastal beauty. The town of Makarska is situated on a horseshoe bay with an abundance of pebbly beaches. They aren't quite the same as fine sand beaches, such as the one near Nin, but they're certainly better than the rocky edges and drop-offs found in some other places along the coast. The old town center has cobblestone streets, a Franciscan monastery and other architecture contributing to a charmingly old European character. ![]() |
