© Don Douglas | ![]() The sign above shows the places where the fietsveer boats cross the Rhine, Altrhein and Pannerdenskanal (shown by the red symbols). It is found at the eastern corner of Millingerwaard, where the Rhine (Rhein/Rijn) forks, with the Pannerdens Canal going northwest toward Arnhem and the Waal going toward Nijmegen. There is a campground on the river at Gendt, apparently set up mostly for campers and trailers (or “caravans” as the British prefer to call them). One of the ferries crosses and goes upriver a bit to Millingerwaard. Another one crosses about five more kilometers upriver at the east end of the town of Millingen aan de Rijn. The third of the three crossings which are on the central part of the sign goes over the Pannerdenskanaal, past Doornenburg castle and back to Gendt. It also carries motorists in cars. Much of the bicycle (or hiking) route is free of motor vehicle traffic and passes through a wetland preserve with abundant wildlife. Several boat tours also do this route by water from ports in Nijmegen, Millingen, Arnhem and Emmerich. Most of the people youll meet along the way are Dutch and German. Americans and Japanese who prefer to encounter someone besides other American and Japanese tourists in their travels will love the place. |
