![]() Imagine the sight to which the Dutch were treated! Zheng Chenggong and his armada of 8,000 war junks and a quarter million fighting men drove the Dutch off Taiwan and championed the causes of the Ming princes. In the 19th century Gulangyu Island became a home for European dignitaries, diplomats, and tycoons. They covered the island with grand European architecture. Often called “Piano Island” because of its large number of musicians and music schools, Gulangyu is one of China’s most fascinating destinations. Cars and bicycles are not permitted, so it’s quiet (except for practicing music students) and a great place to hike and explore. It’s worth the short hike up to Sunlight Rock, the island’s highest point, for the panoramic views. From his perch on the rock, Zheng Chenggong, also known as Koxinga the Noble Pirate, still stands guard — mostly over tourists and locals enjoying the beach. |
