Birds
For
many people, the birds are Heligoland's
principal draw. They've
been coming to the island to view the many species and their behaviors
since just after the turn of the 20th century. We are certainly not
birding experts and would welcome comments here from those who are.
Meanwhile, there are some excellent online sources of information. One,
the Ornithologische Arbeitsgemeinschaft Heligoland e.V., or OAG, has
information on Heligoland birds here.
Below is a photo of a sign placed on Heligoland by the Verein Jordsand Zum Schutze der Seevögel und der Natur e.V. (http://www.jordsand.eu/). It identifies birds which can be seen on the island: Dreizehenmöwe (Black-legged Kittiwake, Rissa tridactyla), Eissturmvogel (Northern Fulmar, Fulmarus glacialis), Basstölpel (Northern Gannet, Morus bassanus), Tordalk (Razorbill, Alca torda), and Trottellumme (Common Murre or Guillemot, Uria aalge).
