When the weather’s right — very cold — you can see people skating on ponds and backwater bays off the Waal. The city in the distance is Nijmegen, but no doubt these scenes are repeated all over Holland and much of the Lower Rhine region of Germany. Two days after these pictures were taken, the weather warmed up to around 10°C (or 50°F) and it rained. The opportunity to do outdoor ice skating is definitely not guaranteed.
