Scenes of Kalkar in the Niederrhein, Germany

The smallish city of Kalkar is located on the site of Burginatium, a Roman cavalry post. Artifacts of Kalkar’s Roman past can be found in the municipal museum. With a name thought to derive from a reference to a bend in the river, Kalkar exudes medieval history even more than other cities and towns of the Niederrhein. Established in 1230 by Count Dietrich IV of Kleve, it was awarded municipal rights in 1242. Two centuries later the city hall was completed and it remains one of the largest in the Niederrhein. A “must see” is the church of St. Nicolai, with its Gothic sculptures and world-famous carved altars.
