Kovalam Beach near Trivandrum (Thiruvananthapuram) is a fine blend of sun, sand and warm saltwater. If you get tired of floating aimlessly and soaking up the sun, there’s shopping for trinkets and meeting the locals (who will approach you whether you’re interested or not). One of the things they have to offer is a canoe ride around the cove, a most basic form of Watertravel experience that is worth the few rupees they ask.

We stayed at the Kovalam Ashok Beach Resort, which is pricey compared to others in the area but a bargain compared to beachfront lodging elsewhere in the world. It is air conditioned and designed to give a sense of privacy in rooms with walled verandahs.
