Apremont-sur-Allier

Apremont-sur-Allier is a village that looks as if the last two or three centuries hadn’t passed. The impression is spoiled only slightly by a paved road that runs through it. Though the line between quaint and ramshackle is rather faintly drawn in provincial France, homes in Apremont-sur-Allier all appear to be very well maintained and yet still retain a look of authentic antiquity. A château on the hill dominates the area. Its grounds have been developed into a fine garden, perusal of which will cost you an entry fee.

Arriving fairly early in the morning, all we found missing was the crowds of American and Japanese tourists one would normally expect to see at such a fascinating place. Of course, at noon it might well be a very different story.

The one person we found on duty in the town’s tourist office spoke only French, perhaps an indication that international marketing isn’t their highest priority. In any case, Apremont-sur-Allier is very well worth visiting. More about the village can be found here (in French).
