Cruise boats on the Rhine.

Cruising the Middle Rhine Valley

The Middle Rhine — Mittelrhein in Deutsch — is without doubt one of the more fascinating regions of Germany. Of course, there are castles here and there alongside the Rhine River from its headwaters in the Swiss Alps till it flows into the North Sea. When people speak of “Castles on the Rhine,” though, it’s fairly certain they’re talking about this one very sightly stretch of river.

Known for its steeply terraced vineyards and many castles, the Rhine Gorge is well worth a visit. There are many opportunities for river cruising — from inexpensive short trips on tourist boats to long excursions with private staterooms and all the trimmings — making the Middle Rhine a perfect destination for people who love to travel by water.
