Montage of Xanten pictures

Although the Romanesque structure with impressive columns and many of the artifacts, are reproductions, Xanten does indeed date back to the Roman era. Archaeological digs in several areas around the town are off limits to visitors, but the exposed ancient building foundations are easily seen behind their fences.

The town also has a Roman-style amphitheater with musical performances in the summertime and lots of interesting architecture from Germany’s medieval period. The museum in the middle of town, close to the nearly 800-year-old cathedral, displays the archaelogical findings. Some of the artifacts on display in Xanten are reproductions, and a much larger collection with authentic relics can be seen in Cologne.

Of special interest to those with children is a wooden play structure surrounded by lots of open grass field so they can burn off the energy stored up by too much traveling around with you.
